On December 16th, the new flight from Rome’s Leonardo Da Vinci-Fiumicino Airport to Guangzhou via Wuhan took off, operated by China Southern Airlines. Thanks to this new entry, from now on Italy’s main hub will host all the Chinese airlines that operate long-distance flights. Together with Charles De Gaulle Airport in Paris, also certified by Welcome Chinese, Fiumicino offers direct flights to the largest number of Chinese cities. The new Guangzhou-Wuhan service will operate three times a week.

A GLOBAL NETWORK - Wuhan and Guangzhou are strategically located from a logistic and business point of view. The latter is the biggest port in Southern China and, with 13 million inhabitants, comes after Beijing and Shanghai in importance. The city (also known as Canton in the West) is the gateway for flights departing to Australia and Oceania. Wuhan, instead, is known as the “Chinese Chicago” due to its central position: flight time to Beijing, Shanghai, Chongqing and Guangzhou is one hour 30 minutes. China Southern is the first Chinese airline to surpass 100 million passengers per year, positioning itself as the first in Asia and the third in the world.

LEADERSHIP ROLE - Currently, Rome’s Fiumicino airport operates 30 flights to Greater China, a definition that includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, plus all the destinations included in the diplomatic network of Italy (Chongqing was added recently), illustrating the attractiveness of the Italian hub for Mandarin-speaking passengers and the leadership of Rome in this sector of the market.

MASSIVE PROMOTION - The new route was promoted with two official events, one in Milan and the other in Rome, plus a third to celebrate the landing of the first flight. All events were organized with the collaboration of Welcome Chinese and saw the participation, among other illustrious guests, of Beijing’s ambassador in Italy, Mr. Li Ruiyu, plus official representatives from China authorities and local partners like Alitalia.
